Maintaining and automating a VMware NSX-T infrastructure as code

In a more and more API driven world where companies are using automation tools to deploy, maintain and destroy their virtual infrastructures, one open-source tool gets more and more traction: HashiCorp Terraform.

There is a Terraform provider available to manage your virtual machines in a VMware vSphere infrastructure since a while, but it was not easily possible to also manage your NSX-T virtual network infrastructure for these virtual machines.

This has changed some months ago: VMware released a Terraform provider for NSX-T in April 2018.

In this little post I want to highlight some useful r...

Why is Network Insight so hot?

The short answer is: Usability

And there is so much more to talk about it. The network virtualization layer mainly addresses the East-West traffic, so the Traffic IN our datacenter. We do have different scenarios: On prem Datacenters, logical Datacenters, Cloud Datacenters. With all that different kind of datacenter networks we do have basically connectivity through physical and virtual networks.

From an troubleshooting point of view it’s a network. Network Insight enables visibility across virtual and physical networks. From a developing perspective it was made to understand the communicatio...

What is the VMware Virtual Cloud Network?

A couple of weeks ago, VMware launched the Virtual Cloud Network (VCN). It’s kind of obvious that this is a marketing term and not a specific product or service. However, it’s not all fluff and there is actually some good meat behind this announcement and I’ll dig into it in this post.

Overall Vision

To start, the overall vision for VCN is pretty clear:

The Virtual Cloud Network will enable businesses to connect, better secure, and optimize the delivery of applications and data in an era when a majority of workloads exist outside the data center. With a Virtual Cloud Network, customers will b...
